Turning Beer Cans into Meals

By recycling trash from parties, students make money for a local food bank.

Not many students look at trash from weekend parties and see it as a resource – unless, that is, you are Jeremy Hurley.

Jeremy is the founder of “Cans to Cans,” a volunteer program at the University of Virginia. Now in its second year of operation, the program cleans up the empty cans from college parties and makes money from the aluminum. Not only do volunteers help the environment, all the program’s proceeds go towards supporting a local food bank. For the committed volunteers of Cans to Cans, the message is clear. Party on students. Just give us your cans later.

Speakers: Brad Jones, Will Bravante, Bethany Mosher
Music: “Upbeat” by Jon Luc Hefferman
